Custom Tanning

If you wish to have us do custom tanning for you, firstly you must properly preserve the skins in accordance with our Preservation Instructions. By mail, we can only accept dry salted pelts for custom tanning.

If you do not promptly preserve the skins, we are not responsible for failure to tan. We will know generally upon inspection or in the first days of processing if it had been improperly preserved. We will always make “best effort” to tan, no matter the animal or condition of the skin.

Type of Tannage

A Sulphonic Acid agent that has been synthetically manufactured, and lubricated with a bisulfated oil. The finished product is White leathered, soft, durable, and stretchy. They have no “shelf life” and do not fall apart with age. The finished skin is nontoxic and extremely resistant to microbiological attack.

Skins Accepted

We accept the following types of animals with a reasonable guarantee of quality tannage, hair-on or hair-off:

  • Sheep
  • Goat
  • Deer

The following animals we are willing to accept, but due to our processing being specialized towards sheep, we cannot offer a reasonable guarantee of quality tannage (we will still do our best):

  • Coyote
  • Bear
  • Horse
  • Beaver
  • Fox
  • Mink
  • Pets

We do not accept anything other than the animals listed above.

Pricing

Generally a custom tanned skin will be about 25-50% lower than our store price for an equivalent product. However, many things impact the price, such as difficulties in cleaning and how well the animal was butchered and the skin preserved. Some skins will end up costing more than an equivalent product, usually due to filthiness. If you would like a quote, purchase a $0.50 Custom Work Request ticket and I will give you a close number on the final price if you provide a photograph of both sides of the animal, preferably after flaying and fleshing but before preservation.

Process

  1. Butcher and Properly Preserve
  2. Place a Custom Work Deposit (one deposit per skin)

  4. Upon receipt we will inspect the skins while dry and notify you of induction into processing and provide an estimation unto completion (Usually takes two weeks)

If you change your mind

If you pay for the deposit and decide to cancel within 10 days of purchasing the deposit, we will refund the entire amount.

If you pay for the deposit and have not shipped after 10 days, you will be contacted and if we get no response within a reasonable timeframe, you will refunded 80% of your deposit, and the remainder will be compensation for our time.

If you decide you don’t want the service anymore (after you ship, before we begin processing), we will use the deposit to pay for return shipping to you, and some of the deposit will be forfeited for our time, and the remainder refunded to you.

If you decide you do not want the finished product after tanning, you have forfeited both your deposit and the product, and we reserve the right to sell the product to recoup the cost of production.
